Hair Care Tips for the Summer

Hair is one of the most sensitive parts of the human body. Chemically treated and colored hair can be great to enhance your looks but it needs a lot more care and protection than natural hair to maintain its sheen. Water, sun, even dust and wind can cause serious damage especially if you sport colored hair. Here are a few tips you can follow to maintain your hair in perfect condition this summer.

Going out for a swim in the ocean or at a local pool

Sea salt and chlorinated water can make your hair look frizzy and dull. The condition is worse especially with dyed hair as dyes and other chemical colorants make the hair more porous. Apply a protein rich conditioner or get a hair treatment before going out for the swim. You can also use a hair mask treatment for further protection. Rinse your hair immediately after the swim as prolonged exposure to sea salt or chlorine can aggravate the condition.

Summer styling

As much as possible, try to use a wide toothed comb to style your hair. Wet hair has a tendency to break more quickly than dry hair. Avoid brushing when your hair is wet. Also avoid straightening irons and curling tongs during the summer. These can cause severe damage. Blow drying is also not advisable. Let your hair dry naturally in summer. They best way to keep your hair safe during this time is to reduce using artificial products and instead try to keep it simple and natural. Avoid ponytails

Try to avoid tight ponytails as it can cause tension build up in the hairline and cause the hair to break. Avoid rubber bands and poor quality ponytail bands. As much as possible tie your hair either in a bun or a loose ponytail.

Home made hair masks are great ways to care for your hair in summer at a low cost. A coconut or olive oil mask can provide your hair with the much required proteins and keep them well-nourished throughout the summer. All you need to do is rub oil into the scalp and hair, allow it to soak before washing. A mild shampoo is recommended.

Protecting your hair from damage and caring for it is not a difficult task. Use natural products and do not put your hair under stress. If you can do this, you will end up with great looking hair even as the mercury soars this summer.
