The History about Pin Straight Hair
The origin and evolution of hair straightening methods go back many centuries like the 1800s. Throughout history, hairstyles have been recognized as a marker for social, political, and economical status. Straight hair was one such marker for respected members of the society during those times.
Early heat styling methods
The earliest hair straightening methods involved tying hair in cloth fragments and applying tension to straighten it out. This practice evolved into heat styling methods. The hair and scalp was treated with oil, and subjected to heat and mechanical stress from a fire or iron. Hot-combing is also one such method that developed among people. After the application of oil to clean hair, they would run a heated metal comb rapidly to straighten the strands. The effects of this method were temporary and did not last if the air was humid. These methods of heat styling also damaged the scalp and hair.
Origin of chemical straighteners
In the mid-1800s, pin straight hair was considered to be a trait of the elite society. African Americans needed to tame their curly and kinky textured hair to be accepted in the society. Curl-I-Cure, a chemical hair straightening product was launched in the markets in Virginia. Subsequently, Madam C.J. Walker also launched a line of hair care products for these people. She promoted her products to encourage people to maintain healthy hair and scalp by spreading awareness about grooming themselves.
In early 1900s, Walter H. Sammons patented his design for a hair straightener targeted for African American hair. The device was a heated straightening comb that could tame any kind of curly, wavy, or frizzy hair. As hair straightening devices and chemical hair straightening products kept evolving during the 1950s, George E. Johnson developed one of the first successful chemical hair relaxers that had fewer side effects on hair.
Recent developments in hair straightening
In the past few decades, there has been a remarkable progress in the hair styling industry pertaining to hair straightening methods. New types of mechanical and chemical straighteners have been launched, which provide varying effects on different hair types.
While mechanical hair straighteners produce temporary effects, chemical straighteners or relaxers offer long-term results that please women all over the world. All women use hair straightening products and the solutions are not just restricted to African Americans. Science and technology have improved radically to ensure that women can get better results on their hair with the available products while reducing any risks in process.
