The Origin and Evolution of Blow-dryer

Everyone knows that a blow-dryer is a device used to dry, style, and set hair. Depending on whether the electric coil inside the dryer is heated or not, the air from the electric fan is hot or cool for the purpose of drying and styling. Before the invention of the blow-dryer, women used the energy of the sun and wind to dry their hair. There was a long period of inception, invention, and evolution of the blow-dryer, which has now led to the expansion of hairstyling industry.

History behind the blow-dryer

Initially people depended on the sunny and windy days to wash their hair and dry it. As technology came into existence, people began to use the vacuum cleaner for the purpose of drying the hair. The vacuum cleaners of the olden days used to pull in, and blow out air. Around the 19th century, people attached a hose to the exhaust end of a vacuum cleaner and dried their hair.

The original blow-dryers

The vacuum cleaner served as an inspiration for Alexander Godefroy, who developed the first model of the blow-dryer. His model was a hood blow-dryer under which a woman’s head was positioned. The dome-shaped dryer was connected to hoses and motor using which hot air was blasted to dry the woman’s hair. Although this hairdryer is antiquated in use, it can still be found at vintage salons.

In America, Gabriel Kazanjian patented the first blow-dryer that underwent a lot of modifications between 1911 and 1920. Finally, the handheld blow-dryer was launched in the market in 1920. It worked on the same principle as the modern blow-dryer with heated coils. When the coils were heated, the device produced hot air. Although the blow-dryer was received well among the public, it did not produce enough power to dry hair completely.

Evolution of modern day blow-dryers

About a decade later, gas heated blow-dryers were invented that had harmful effects on clients. In the mid-20th century, dome-shaped blow-dryers became popular as they provided even drying. Soon after the curly hair trend went out of style, handheld blow-dryers gained popularity. These blow-dryers have undergone many modifications to their interior and exterior design to produce different effects. Since the heat damages hair, scalp, and cuticles, blow-dryers in the recent years have ceramic and ionic parts, cool air settings, temperature control, airflow control, different types of nozzles, and various functionalities.
