All you need to know about Perms
Perms have evolved a lot since the 80s when crimped perms were all the rage. Nowadays, perms have the ability to fine-tune your hair to provide the exact amount of waves and curls you are looking for. Perms can be done to add a little body to limp, fine hair or they can be used to get some sexy, loose waves or corkscrew curls.
Good candidates for perms
Perms are the most suited for hair that hasn't been highlighted or colored. Perming hair which has already been damaged by color or highlights can cause major frizz. People with short layers or dry hair aren't suited for perming as dry hair will dry out more and short layers will end up looking like a poodle after the perm. To be sure as to whether or not you can have perming done, ask your stylist. You will need to inform him or her about every single process of chemical treatment the hair has undergone since the past 2 years. Asian hair and black hair are difficult to perm but a specialist will be able to handle a perm for your hair structure. Also, keep in mind that the perm will look better on women with thicker hair.
How much time does it take?
Perms can take up almost 2 hours depending on the length of your hair and the speed with which your stylist works. The stylist applies a chemical solution that aids in breaking your hair's structural bonds, and another solution known as neutralizer. It's also good to remember that it takes almost 28 hours for a perm to relax, before panicking about the results. Most perms last around 2 to 6 months after they are done.
Prepping for a perm
For preparation, you need to use a shampoo followed by any moisturizing conditioner. Remember to avoid deep-conditioning at least for 24 hours before a perm, as it could result in a failed perm.
The rod's size
The curl tightness depends on the rod's size and the amount of time the solution for the perm stays in. To be sure, ask the stylist to give you a run-through of all the rod types that will be used. This will allow you to suggest any changes if you feel that the curls might be too tight.
